I was thrilled to be contacted by Rochester City Ballet to attend the InStudio preview of The Nutcracker. It’s one of my favorites, such a nostalgic piece and it puts me in the holiday mood like nothing else can. Photographer Amy Moore and I came to the studio early to set up while the dancers stretched and warmed up, I don’t think they stopped moving the whole time. It was fascinating to watch them prepare, so much focus and intensity. It was mostly silent in the warm studio, no nervous chatter, just the occasional groans and squeaks of the barre as the dancers stretched against it. The dancers remained focused as the rest of the guests filled into the studio.
As soon as the first act began, the studio was filled with beautiful music and movement. The audience was enchanted and the dancers were majestic and fluid. They dance as one. David Palmer (artistic director) answered some questions after the preview and a young girl asked how long the dancers have been practicing for this performance… His answer: “FOREVER!!!” And I believe it. The whole preview was magical and festive and I didn’t want it to end. It was perfection and I’m proud that such artistry is alive and well in our city. The Nutcracker will be performed November 23-27 in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theater. You can find tickets HERE. Go and support our local dancers, you will not be disappointed. Enjoy the rest of the photos taken by Amy Moore.
