Roc Girls to Know: Meet Lindsay & Rachel of Roc the Shot

Tell us your name, age & what you do.
Lindsay Stephany Lau, I'm 32 and I'm a photographer (Lindsay Stephany Photography, ROCtheShot), mama (Henry) + international educator (The College at Brockport).

Rachel Elizabeth (Liz) Ludwig, I’m 24 and a full time business owner + photographer at RachelLizPhotography

Give us a little more of your history.
Lindsay: I grew up in Rochester and went to The College at Brockport for both undergrad and grad. I have always been interested in art (I studied Studio Art in school) but never picked up a camera until after college as a way to document my travels. Needless to say, I fell in love. Now I am primarily a wedding + couples photographer, but I love shooting families as well. I collaborate with local flower farmer Jenny Rae Siplo of Flowerwell on Mama + Me sessions with flower crowns for moms and their kiddos that are just to-die-for beautiful. I work at Brockport part-time in International Education, and I teach at ROCtheShot!

Rachel: I grew up in Boston, MA but moved to Rochester in elementary school.  I attended Syracuse University to study Biology but totally changed paths and graduated in 3 years once I knew I wanted to launch my photography business full time! I lucked out with amazing (AMAZING) clients who spread the word and I quickly became a wedding-based business.  My husband + I were high school sweethearts and eloped in British Columbia so I have a special love for capturing elopements and destination weddings. I absolutely LOVE my couples and am so lucky to be able to do what I love every dang day. Teaching workshops became one more way I am able to stay inspired and collaborate with other local vendors/photographers/creatives!

Tell us more about what you do:
At ROCtheShot, we teach photography workshops for people interested in learning more about their DSLR cameras and the business side of photography for those who want to take that step. We actually met at a photography workshop in Canada and decided soon after to bring some photography workshops here to Rochester.

Our workshops are perfect for total beginners and also for aspiring photographers. In Workshop I we teach the ins and outs of shooting in Manual mode, while Workshop II is geared toward people who might be interested in taking their photography to another level—in that workshop we talk about workflow and editing, client interaction, style, posing (with models!), etc. We're offering our first Styled Workshop on April 30 and will be setting up a mini wedding in our studio (the MRKT Loft!). It'll be perfect for people who want to add to their portfolio, connect with local creatives and perfect posing skills and the technical elements of their photography. And we're collaborating with Jenny Berliner Photography to teach a Photo Editing Workshop which will focus on both Lightroom and Photoshop (May 22).

In all of our workshops, we try to keep things light, cater to our attendees needs, questions + interests, make people laugh (at us? with us? both? who knows), and we have been known to feed people donuts.

What are some of your favorite things about Rochester?
We have the most wonderful creative community here in Rochester! From photographers to artists, chefs to designers, Rochester is pretty darn amazing and we feel lucky to live here.

We love to eat + drink, some of our favs are: Ugly Duck Coffee (the best atmosphere owned by some amazing humans including our studio mate Cris Van Grol), Cure + Fiorella (just a few doors down from our studio at the Public Market) and Voula's Greek Sweets (ridiculously good vegetarian + vegan food in the cutest little space). We’re both suckers for anything midcentury inspired + have been known to shop at Abode…. alot! Also special shout out to Danielle Raymo over at the Rochester Brainery for hosting the mini-version of our workshop! Rochester, we love ya lots!
